Is Grill'd Coeliac Safe? A Full Kitchen Protocol Review

Grill'd is one of Australia's largest burger chains, with over 160 locations nationally. It markets a gluten-free menu prominently, making it a common choice for coeliacs looking for a quick, reliable meal. But marketing and kitchen reality are not the same thing. This review looks at what Grill'd's gluten-free offering actually means for coeliacs.

Grill'd's gluten-free offering

Grill'd offers a dedicated gluten-free bun and a range of burgers that can be ordered gluten-free. Their menu marks gluten-free items clearly, and they publish an allergen guide on their website. For many diners avoiding gluten as a lifestyle choice, Grill'd is a convenient option.

However, offering gluten-free products is different from operating a coeliac-safe kitchen. The critical question for coeliacs is not what is on the menu, but how it is prepared.

The kitchen protocol reality

Grill'd operates shared kitchens. This means:

  • Gluten-containing buns and gluten-free buns are handled in the same kitchen.
  • Preparation surfaces, gloves and utensils are shared between regular and gluten-free orders unless specific protocols are followed for each order.
  • Grills are shared, meaning gluten from regular buns and coatings can transfer to surfaces used for gluten-free burgers.

Grill'd states that staff follow procedures to minimise cross-contact when a gluten-free order is placed, such as changing gloves and using separate equipment. These procedures reduce risk, but a shared kitchen can never fully eliminate cross-contact. Flour and gluten residues circulate in the air and settle on surfaces in any kitchen handling wheat bread.

Dedicated fryer status

This is the most important question for many coeliacs. At the time of writing, Grill'd's fryer status is not consistent across all locations. Some outlets operate dedicated gluten-free fryers, while others share fryers between gluten-free and regular items. You must confirm the fryer status with staff at your specific location before ordering hot chips.

A shared fryer is one of the highest cross-contact risks in any kitchen. Oil used to fry breaded or gluten-containing items will transfer gluten to gluten-free chips cooked in the same oil.

Cross-contamination risk

For a highly sensitive coeliac, Grill'd presents a moderate cross-contamination risk. The ingredients may be gluten-free, but the shared kitchen environment means the final meal is not guaranteed to be free of gluten traces. Individual sensitivity varies, and some coeliacs report no symptoms after eating at Grill'd, while others do not tolerate it.

Our verdict

Grill'd is gluten-aware, not coeliac-dedicated. It is a reasonable option for gluten-avoidant diners and for coeliacs who tolerate low-level cross-contact, provided you:

  • Confirm with staff that they follow gluten-free preparation procedures for your order.
  • Verify dedicated fryer status at your specific location before ordering chips.
  • Treat it as a "lower risk" rather than "zero risk" option.

For coeliacs who are highly sensitive to trace gluten or who react to low-level cross-contact, Grill'd is not a coeliac-safe venue. A dedicated gluten-free restaurant eliminates this risk entirely.

A safer alternative

If you want a burger and chips with zero cross-contact risk, choose a dedicated gluten-free venue instead. Venues like Nodo in Brisbane or Greenhouse Canteen on the Gold Coast operate fully gluten-free kitchens where every item — including the fryers — is safe for coeliacs.

This review is based on publicly available information and general kitchen protocols. Procedures vary by location and over time. Always confirm current protocols with staff at your specific Grill'd outlet before ordering, and consult Grill'd's official allergen guide for the latest information.
